If you keep an eye on our website, Facebook page or twitter account you will know that at the end of 2016 we had three We’re Here Too events where we brought together people who wanted more opportunities for older people to participate in the issues and activities that interest them. If you came to any of the events then you would have seen Caroline, one of our sessional workers who helped plan the events and had lots of interesting conversations with older people at them.

Caroline also has been having important conversations with community groups as part of our Creating Conversations project. Thanks to the background and planning from these two projects Caroline has been able to arrange for a dementia-friendly mass service. On Sunday the 12th of March at 4pm there will be evening prayer and benediction at John’s church (Aurs Road Barrhead G78 2RW). People with dementia are warmly welcomed. Caroline understands that many older people are lonely and isolated and through projects like this people can connect with their communities and share their gifts instead of focusing on what they are no longer able to do.

Caroline shared that as many families struggle following a diagnosis some avoid public places if the person they care for needs to walk or can be vocal as part of their dementia. In Caroline’s poster for the event she explains that she hopes the session will evoke memories for the people who attend thanks to the traditional hymns, burning incense and prayerful atmosphere.

If you would like to attend please feel free to bring along your children, grandchildren, family and friends. Caroline will also be planning other dementia friendly events using church and community halls throughout Glasgow.
