Access and Covid Safety at Queer Families events

About Queer Families

Queer Families aims to be a safe, inclusive space for parents, carers, children, other family members, and people hoping to start a LGBTQI+ family. 💜

We’re committed to accessibility, and are always working to make our meet-ups more fun, safe and accessible for everyone. This page shares access info about the space where we meet, and what we do to help families stay safe from covid.

Access 🌷

The space

We meet indoors and outdoors at Rumpus Room (in the Bike for Good courtyard, Langside Lane, off Victoria Road, Govanhill). Indoors, there’s a wheelchair-accessible bathroom with baby changing space, and a small kitchen. There is step-free access to this bathroom, but through a different door on the outside of the building. The doorways have a low step and are quite narrow, but wide enough for people using powerchairs. Outdoors, there’s a table with chairs, shelter (and outdoor heaters) if it’s raining, and space to play and explore.

You can also check the Rumpus Room studio’s full access document here.

Taking part

We know it can be overwhelming joining a group for the first time, so the facilitator (Leon or Ingrid) and the families will all do our best to welcome you! Let us know if you’d like more support, or want a chat before you come along.

The group celebrates families’ different cultures and languages. Conversations in multiple languages are very welcome here!

We support everyone’s human rights. Queer Families is a space where we can talk about access to human rights – healthcare, education, safety, social and economic inclusion, etc. – and any challenges families are facing. Families support each other by talking, listening, sharing information and encouraging each other.

Everyone needs different things to access events. Is there anything we can do to make meetups more accessible for your family?

Covid safety 🌼

We want the group to be inclusive of people in our communities with different levels of risk to Covid-19, and we all need safe ways to get together. We ask that people don’t attend if they have Covid-19 symptoms, and that adults wear a face covering indoors, if they can. We have masks and hand sanitiser available.

The indoor space has an open window and air purifier with a HEPA filter, but no HVAC. There’s the option to socialise indoors or outside. We encourage people to take part in a way that feels safe for them, and let us know if we can help or change things!

What we’re asking

If you can, please wear a mask indoors. If you can’t wear a mask, don’t worry, we’ll all understand that. And, as always, be respectful to each other 🙂

Why we’re asking this

Wearing a face mask helps protect people who are most vulnerable to viruses. We want Queer Families to be accessible for everyone, so we’re trying out different things to improve Covid safety. Asking people to wear a mask indoors is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of airborne transmission – we’re also working on air filtration!

About the space

We meet in Rumpus Room, a young peoples’ art studio in Glasgow. Here are some pictures so you know how to find us.
