The New Beginnings Club – East Lothian

For the last few months, Outside the Box have been working with the members of the New Beginnings Club (nbc) to create a newsletter as part of our Connecting Equalities project.

The members of the NBC wanted to take control of it, so Christine has been showing them how to use Canva to create it.

The newsletter comes out every two months and Christine will be supporting them over the next few weeks to create the next issue. A ‘how to’ guide will also be created so that the group will be able to do it themselves for future issues.

After the group feel confident with Canva and the newsletter, the plan is to move onto Biteable. Training is being organised for later in the year with the group on how to make their own Biteable videos.

The New Beginnings Club is more than just a social club, it is member driven. With members making the decisions on their priorities and activities and being on the board of Trustees supported by volunteers and a part-time administrator.

They focus on ‘home-grown’ activities devised and run by members with volunteer support.  Activities include weekly social evenings, craft clubs and trips out. They also have a focus on healthy living, with allotments and healthy eating cookery classes, and guided nature walks.

They also offer members the opportunity for self-development and learning skills which are not otherwise available to them. An example of this is its award-winning weekly radio show ‘Happy Talk’ on East Coast FM.
