As part of our new Money Owls project in Falkirk, we met with Falkirk District Credit Union. It was great to chat to Lynne and find out how Money Owls and the FDCU can work together. We were really impressed by the range of services offered by the credit union. If you think that a credit union is all about savings, think again. Yes, of course they do offer a savings account, but there is so much more:

  1. Low cost loans – a good different option from payday loans. You need to have been a saver for 8 weeks before you can apply for a loan
  2. Funeral plans – these plans are for people aged 50+, organised with local funeral homes
  3. Free insurance – this covers savings and loans
  4. Engage cards – these are pre-payment debit cards, which can be used online, and are a great alternative to credit cards. You also earn cashback at selected retailers, which get paid into your account monthly
  5. They have collection points throughout Falkirk, including at schools, so that the credit union services are accessible to all.

Now isn’t that great? And let’s not forget that all credit unions are run not for profit and are owned and controlled by the members who use its services.
