Queer Stories: Starting a LGBTQ+ family (peer support workshop)

The experience of starting a family or giving birth as a Queer person can be varied, joyous and challenging. We need to make space to talk about it!

This event will be a chance for LGBTQIA+ people in Scotland, at any stage in their journey, to learn about services and support they can access. Whether you’re accessing fertility support, adoption services, or just wanting to learn more about your options for the future, come along and join the conversation.

What the event will involve

We will hear from speakers from the Queer Families group, LGBT Health and Wellbeing and more organisations, on starting a family in Scotland as a LGBTQ+ person. We’ll hear a combination of personal stories and tips, and information about how services work.

We’ll use the Zoom chat function throughout the event, and at the end there’ll be time for everyone to talk, ask questions and give encouragement to each other.

We will announce exact speaker timings closer to the time, but the event outline is:

  • 7pm: Welcome and introductions
  • 7.10-7.45: Speakers
  • 7.45: A 15 minute break
  • 8pm: Speakers
  • 8.15: Group discussion and Q&A

How to take part in the Queer Birth event

We will be on the video conference app Zoom.

Register your free space here and you will receive a confirmation email with the meeting link and password to use on the day and time of the event (you don’t need a Zoom account). If you have a Zoom account, your confirmation email will also include the meeting ID which you can search in Zoom to find us and schedule a reminder.

We’ll ask everyone to introduce themselves at the beginning, and go over how to take part. We encourage everyone to take part however works for you – camera on or off, moving around, cooking dinner, taking comfort breaks when you need, etc. – whatever fits into your life.

Access needs

We will use some slides, and make sure we describe everything out loud for people listening in. If we can do anything to make accessing the event accessible for you (such as BSL interpretation or captioning), or you have questions, please get in touch with Leon at Leon@otbds.org in advance. We’re committed to access, and want this event to be inclusive for everyone – so please feel welcome to ask.

We can’t wait to see you there!
