In April we talked to some people living in Care homes in Scotland. Living in a care home is a big change for people. Some people make a positive choice to move into a care home and others arrive after a crisis that means they can’t go home.

But people told us some things help them live ordinary lives :

  • Having family and friends to visit and keep in contact with
  • Having the same kind of routine as they had when living at home
  • It’s also good to have a routine and structure
  • Having good food
  • Inviting friends round for a cup of tea
  • Having a clean and organised room
  • Having people to chat to and have good conversations
  • Books to read
  • Fun activities to do
  • Feeling supported and cared for
  • Getting well enough to travel by car
  • Feeling safe

“It’s good to invite people in for a cup of tea”

“I really enjoy the armchair aerobics – I didn’t think it would make much difference but I can stand up so much better now.   We also do other things like bingo, dancing, coffee, arts and crafts.”

“I’d like to be in my own home but I can’t live on my own now so this does me very well”
