LINKS Eyemouth: Christmas for less

The LINKS Eyemouth project addresses issues around waste or surplus food, uses local produce and low-carbon transport for local shopping and delivery via an e-cargo bike.

This winter LINKS has been delivering community cooking sessions in Eyemouth and in December four families in the Eyemouth area took part in our LINKS Christmas for less sessions at the Community Centre in partnership with the Early Years Centre. These sessions weren’t just about saving money on food but also how to cook the meal in a cost-effective way to save on fuel costs.

Families took part in two Christmas for less sessions, the first focused on the turkey and vegetables and the second on the starter (soup) and dessert (healthy and easy mini trifles).

Recipes and recipe bags then went out to four families at a total cost of £58.39. The bags included a £14 fresh turkey, 15p for all the veg, and gravy and stuffing. This meant the families could put into practice what they have learned on Christmas Day.

The cost per family was only £14.49!

Our southeast team also made over 100 packs of eco-friendly reindeer dust which went out to more families in Eyemouth along with the recipes from our cooking sessions.

The project has recently produced a new winter food resource: What and how to cook in winter. It is full of low-cost winter recipes, information on alternative cooking methods like air fryers and slow cookers and tips for low-cost cooking and shopping. We all have our part to play in the climate crisis and the LINKS project and its families have shared some of their climate action tips and advice for cooking and eating well in winter.
