Last week we went to an event looking at what we can learn from how community led support has been done in South Ayrshire, East Renfrewshire and Scottish Borders. The event was hosted by Health Improvement Scotland, NDTi and the Guardian.
At the event Jenny Pitts, from NDTi, shared the principles of good community led support. This check list could help you if you are planning on using more community led support in what you do and want to make sure you are taking this approach for the right reason:
- Bring people and organisations together around a shared vision
- Focus on communities; each project will be different as each community or group has different needs
- People can get support and advice when they need it so crises are prevented
- The culture is based on trust and empowerment
- People are treated as equals, their gifts and strengths should be built on
- Bureaucracy is the absolute minimum
- The system is responsive
