About

In October 2019 we secured funding from the Denny & District Community Fund administered by Foundation Scotland to develop a dementia café in the Denny area.

This is a 12 month pilot project – a weekly peer support group for people living with dementia and their carers and friends, allowing them to come together, share experiences, laugh and support each other. The café offers a safe space filled with people who understand the realities of dementia and who can support each other.

The café is organised and supported by a member of staff and a group of volunteers. It is hoped that the café will continue indefinitely.

What difference does it make?

The Cafe will benefit the people living with dementia and their families and friends. Living with dementia and caring for someone with the condition can be very isolating.

The main benefits for people attending the café are expected to be:

  • no longer feeling alone;
  • making new friends;
  • having the opportunity to share sensitive and practical concerns;
  • learning from others, for example on how to deal with embarrassing situations;
  • gaining insights and support from others;
  • accepting the condition and learning to live in the present;
  • building and maintaining self-esteem and confidence;
  • learning how to deal with change;
