Learning from the Queer Families peer group

The Queer Families peer-support project created two LGBTQ+ inclusion resources last year, one for families and one for services and organisations supporting them. Through research and sharing stories and experiences, we put together learning on barriers LGBTQ+ families face in Scotland.

Lots of charities, community and arts projects, and services (like health, care, education and wellbeing) working with families deeply care about creating a welcoming atmosphere. Our Advice for Services Supporting LGBTQ Families guide is designed to help organisations understand barriers and first steps.

To help workers and volunteers put best practice into action, we’ve created a follow-up training. Learning is reflective, collective, and works best when we connect ideas to our own contexts. We’re looking forward to creating a space for practitioners and volunteers across Scotland to come together and learn about LGBTQ+ family inclusion!

About the LGBTQI+ Families Training

This training helps organisations become more inclusive, by learning more about barriers LGBTQ families face and steps you can take.

Who the training is for

Organisations and community groups who work with families, provide services to LGBTQ people, or who want to make their practice more inclusive.

Session Content

During the session we will look at understanding different identities and language under the LGBTQ umbrella.

We will talk about some of the assumptions we make about families and how to challenge these.

Organisations will be shown some case studies from the Queer Families group to prompt discussion about the needs of LGBTQ families and the challenges they face.

We will look at examples of inclusive practice and how organisations can adopt these into their own organisation.

Sign up for the session

Sign up for our Queer Families inclusion training on our Eventbrite.

The session costs £20 per person. If your organisation can’t afford this, we’re happy to talk about how we can support you to access the training.
